La Bellezza come Metodo - Paul A.M. Dirac

Lungi dall'essere una scienza arida fatta di sole equazioni e teoremi, la fisica è la quintessenza della ricerca concettuale di come funziona l'universo e quindi anche del perché funziona. In quest'ottica, Dirac, uno dei grandi geni della fisica del primo novecento, argomenta come la spiegazione dei meccanismi dell'universo non possa che essere rappresentata in formalizzazioni teoriche esteticamente belle.

 

Far from being an arid science made up only of equations and theorems, physics is the quintessence of conceptual research into how the universe works and therefore also why it works. In this perspective, Dirac, one of the great geniuses of early twentieth century theoretical physics, argues that the explanation of the mechanisms of the universe can only be represented in aesthetically beautiful theories.

Dopo tre anni di fatiche ho concluso anche questa lettura. Prima di iniziarla, non riuscivo neppure ad immaginare che qualcuno potesse indagare così a fondo, per descrivere in modo logico la natura del pensiero, dell'intelletto e della ragione umana. E' uno di quei testi che, anche se ne ho compreso solo la metà, mi spinge a pormi in modo diverso rispetto ad ogni ragionamento, anche quelli della vita di tutti i giorni.

It took me three years to finish it. When I started, I could not even imagine that someone could investigate so deeply, to logically describe the nature of human thought, intellect and reasoning. It is the kind of book that, even if I understood only half of it, it is now pushing me to think differently every time I reason, even about everyday life.

Riflessione quanto mai attuale sul ruolo che il potere economico esercita nell'alimentare disuguaglianze sociali che le strutture governative contribuiscono a proteggere, invece che a correggerle. Lungi dall'essere un semplice richiamo al ritorno allo stato di natura, il saggio di Rousseau è un richiamo sempre valido per non dimenticarci che sederci sugli allori di passeggere gioie individuali non dovrebbero farci dimenticare che dobbiamo sempre mantenere un occhi critico sulle ingiustizie del mondo.
