Racconti di vita. Scritti con uno stile ruvido come la carta vetrata. Autobiografici non solo negli episodi, ma soprattutto nel descrivere l'immaginario che turbina nella mente dell'autore. La sua visione degli altri artisti, la sua visione del lavoro, la sua visione della società, la sua visione dell'universo femminile, la sua visione di se stesso. Tutto senza filtri. Talmente senza filtri che ad un certo punto mi ha infastidito continuare a leggerli i racconti. Perché in qualche modo costringono il lettore ad interrogarsi sui fantasmi della propria vita. Non so se fosse un effetto voluto da Bukoswki, o se semplicemente il risultato del suo interrogarsi su se stesso. Comunque, l'esito è genialmente disturbante.

 

Life stories. Written in a style as rough as sandpaper. Autobiographical not only in the episodes, but most importantly in describing the imagery that swirls in the author's mind. His vision of other artists, his vision of work, his vision of society, his vision of the female universe, his vision of himself. All without filters. So unfiltered that at some point it annoyed me to continue reading the stories. Because in some way they force the reader to wonder about the ghosts of his own life. I don't know Bukoswki intended to make that impact on the reader, or if it was simply the result of his questioning himself. Regardless, the outcome is brilliantly disturbing.

L'autrice parte da una conoscenza intima e personale delle sofferenze che i nativi del territorio canadese hanno subito in nome dell'assimilazione alla cultura degli invasori europei. Separazione forzate dalle famiglie, scuole-prigioni per i giovani nativi, esclusione dal mondo del lavoro, dai servizi sociali e sanitari, che risultano in famiglie distrutte, tasso elevato di abuso di sostanze, tasso elevato di suicidi, attesa di vita più breve della media. Mettendo assieme dati statistici e storie di persone e famiglie, l'autrice riesce a mostrare similitudini con quello che è accadato e ancora accade ad altri nativi, in Australia, Brasile e Norvegia. Storie tragiche di esclusione che mostrano l'urgenza di comprendere la complessità del mondo, anziché imporre la visione del più forte.

 

The author draws on intimate and personal knowledge of the suffering that Indigenous people in Canada have endured in the name of assimilation into the culture of the European invaders. Forced separation from families, prison-like schools for Indigenous youth, exclusion from the workforce, social services, and healthcare, resulting in broken families, high rates of substance abuse, high suicide rates, and shorter-than-average life expectancy. By bringing together statistical data and the stories of individuals and families, the author highlights similarities with what has happened and is still happening to other Indigenous people in Australia, Brazil, and Norway. These tragic stories of exclusion demonstrate the urgency of understanding the world's complexity, rather than imposing a vision from the top, with money and force.

Per un'abbondanza frugale (malintesi e controversie sulla decrescita) - Serge Latouche

Un po' deludente questo libro. In generale, sono un fautore del concetto di decrescita, o meglio di abbondanza frugale. Purtroppo però, l'approccio scelto dall'autore di controbattere alle controversie e ai malintesi finisce per dedicare il 90% del libro a spiegare cosa non è l'abbondanza frugale. Mi ha lasciato con la curiosità di avere una spiegazione chiara di cosa sia, e soprattutto come la si possa implementare. Spero che l'autore lo abbia fatto in altri suoi testi.

 

This book is a bit disappointing. Generally speaking, I'm a supporter of the concept of degrowth, or rather, frugal abundance. Unfortunately, however, the author's approach to countering controversies and misunderstandings ends up devoting 90% of the book to explaining what frugal abundance isn't. It left me curious about a clear explanation of what it is, and more importantly, how to implement it. I hope the author has done so in his other books.

Magistrale saggio divulgativo sulle frontiere della fisica e la cosmologia. Uno di quei libri in cui arrivi ad un certo punto e ti accorgi che non capisci più molto - almeno io - ma continui a leggere perché sai che qua e là scoprirai e capirai comunque qualcosa di meraviglioso.

A masterful popular science essay, exploring the frontier of physics and cosmology. One of those books, where you reach a point and you realize you don't understand much any more - at least I did not - but you keep reading, because you know you'll discover and understand something marvelous here and there. 

La Bellezza come Metodo - Paul A.M. Dirac

Lungi dall'essere una scienza arida fatta di sole equazioni e teoremi, la fisica è la quintessenza della ricerca concettuale di come funziona l'universo e quindi anche del perché funziona. In quest'ottica, Dirac, uno dei grandi geni della fisica del primo novecento, argomenta come la spiegazione dei meccanismi dell'universo non possa che essere rappresentata in formalizzazioni teoriche esteticamente belle.

 

Far from being an arid science made up only of equations and theorems, physics is the quintessence of conceptual research into how the universe works and therefore also why it works. In this perspective, Dirac, one of the great geniuses of early twentieth century theoretical physics, argues that the explanation of the mechanisms of the universe can only be represented in aesthetically beautiful theories.
