La Speranza Africana - Federico Rampini

Rampini riprende il filone di Cindia. Ventanni dopo aver predetto la crescita esplosiva dei giganti asiatici, mette in luce le potenzialità e le contraddizioni del continente Africano, viaggiando fra le particolarità di vari paesi dove si è recato personalmente, o ha intervistato amici e conoscenti originari di Nigeria, Etiopia, Sudan, Burkina Faso e così via. Rampini restituisce una visione da real-politik,  dove l'autore dice che gli occidentali non possono chiedere ai paesi emergenti di sposare una crescita a zero emissioni, e che è inevitabile che i paesi emergenti passino da un'economia del carbone prima di iniziare la strada verso una decarbonizzata. Che è inevitabile che l'Africa si affidi agli investimenti cinesi perché la Cina non pone condizioni su sostenibilità, corruzione e diritti umani, per creare posti di lavoro, ad esempio in quelle miniere di minerali rari che servono per le batterie delle auto elettriche che pochi nei paesi sviluppati si possonopermettere. Che non esiste nessuna apocalisse dovuta all'emigrazione verso l'Europa, il Medio Oriente e il Nord America, per poi però dirci che le rimesse degli emigrati sono una fonte di reddito indispensabile per la crescita. Su una cosa Rampini ha ragione, i paesi sviluppati non possono guardare all'Africa solo dalla prospettiva Europea e nord Americana.

Rampini picks up where he left off twenty years ago with "Cindia", the book where he predicted the boom of the two Asian giants, China and India. He highlights the potential and contradictions of the African content, and the countries where he traveled or interviewed friends and acquaintances that are originally from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Burkina Faso and so on. Rampini returns a real-politik vision, where the author says that Westerners cannot ask emerging countries to embrace zero-emission growth, and that it is inevitable that emerging countries move from a carbon economy before starting the road towards a decarbonised one. That it is inevitable that Africa relies on Chinese investments because China does not place conditions on sustainability, corruption and human rights, to create jobs, for example in those mines of rare minerals that are used for the batteries of electric cars that developed countries are promoting. That there is no apocalypse due to emigration to Europe, the Middle East and North America, but then telling us that remittances from emigrants are an indispensable source of income for growth. Rampini is right about one thing, developed countries cannot look at Africa only from a European and North American perspective.

Una collezione di articoli scritti nel corso degli ultimi cinquant'anni sulla condizione della donna. Un'amalgama di riflessioni su progressi reali e ipocrisie che ancora esistono. Purtroppo manca un filo conduttore, a parte il tema generale. Questo rende la lettura frammentaria. La parte più interessante è quella finale dedicata ad un grande reportage giornalistico sulle carceri femminili a fine anni 60.

A collection of news articles written over the course of fifty years on the condition of women in our society. A mixture of reflections on real progress and idiosincrasies that already exist. Unfortunately the book lacks a story, a part from the high level theme. The result is an awkwardly fragmented reading experience. The most interesting and enjoyable part is at the end, when there's a series of article on female prisons that Dacia wrote in the late 1960s.

Il Cazzaro Verde - Andrea Scanzi

Mi aspettavo un libro di inchiesta sulle malefatte di Salvini e della Lega. Invece mi sono trovato a leggere un testo che forse potrebbe passare per una satira teatrale, ma di secondo livello. Dalla vena polemica di Scanzi mi aspettavo di più! 

I was expecting an investigative essay about Salvini and his party (Lega) mischievings. Instead, I found myself reading a satiric novel that, in a best case scenario, could pass for a theatrical piece. I expected much more from Scanzi's controversial thinking. 

La mutazione: come le idee di sinistra sono migrated a destra - Luca Ricolfi

Ricolfi si pone un obiettivo importante, analizzare il perché la sinistra italiana, più di quelle di altri paesi, ha finito per diventare una sinistra delle élite. Una sinistra che non è più in grado di parlare alle periferie, agli operai, ai precari. Lasciando così spazio ad una destra populista, clientelare, revisionista. Dopo un primo capitolo logico e ben strutturato, basato sull'analisi di alcuni dati statistici - che sono il suo lavoro - Ricolfi si perde in uno sproloquio sul politically correct. Usa esempi in modo selettivo e biased per dimostrare le sue tesi. Lascia aperto il dubbio che le battaglia che la sinistra italiana ha raccolto, quelle in particolare sui diritti civili (ad esempio LGBTQ+) e l'ambientalisto, non siano battaglie giuste. 

Ricolfi starts with a commendable objective: that is to analyze why Italian leftist parties, in particular the Democratic Party, ended up being a radical left, more than in other countries. A leftist party that lost its touch with the suburbs, the blue collar workers, the millions that struggle with temporary contracts. Ricolfi rightly argues that this approach left the door open to populist, nepotistic, revisionist parties of the right. However, after a first chapter where he does a good job of analyzing the situation through data - which is his area of expertise - the book gets lost in a rant about the culture of politically correctedness. He uses anecdotal examples in a selective and biased manner to demostrate some of his theses. He leaves the reader with the doubt that he thinks that the political battles that the Italian Democratic Party has picked up in the past 30 years, in particular those around civil rights (e.g., LGBTQ+) and environmental sustainability, are the wrong battles.

Storia della Shoah - Georges Bensoussan

 Al di là dei numeri, Bensoussan riesce a raccontare l'agghiacciante approccio sistematico dei nazisti all'eliminazione degli ebrei e non solo. Una lettura quanto mai necessaria in tempi in cui le tentazioni di revisionismo ringalluzziscono i populismi di tutto il mondo.

Beyond the figures, Bensoussan is able to tell the chilling story of how nazis systematically exterminated jews and not only them. This is a must due read, at a time where populists around the world are pompously pushing revisionism.
