Ricolfi si pone un obiettivo importante, analizzare il perché la sinistra italiana, più di quelle di altri paesi, ha finito per diventare una sinistra delle élite. Una sinistra che non è più in grado di parlare alle periferie, agli operai, ai precari. Lasciando così spazio ad una destra populista, clientelare, revisionista. Dopo un primo capitolo logico e ben strutturato, basato sull'analisi di alcuni dati statistici - che sono il suo lavoro - Ricolfi si perde in uno sproloquio sul politically correct. Usa esempi in modo selettivo e biased per dimostrare le sue tesi. Lascia aperto il dubbio che le battaglia che la sinistra italiana ha raccolto, quelle in particolare sui diritti civili (ad esempio LGBTQ+) e l'ambientalisto, non siano battaglie giuste.
Ricolfi starts with a commendable objective: that is to analyze why Italian leftist parties, in particular the Democratic Party, ended up being a radical left, more than in other countries. A leftist party that lost its touch with the suburbs, the blue collar workers, the millions that struggle with temporary contracts. Ricolfi rightly argues that this approach left the door open to populist, nepotistic, revisionist parties of the right. However, after a first chapter where he does a good job of analyzing the situation through data - which is his area of expertise - the book gets lost in a rant about the culture of politically correctedness. He uses anecdotal examples in a selective and biased manner to demostrate some of his theses. He leaves the reader with the doubt that he thinks that the political battles that the Italian Democratic Party has picked up in the past 30 years, in particular those around civil rights (e.g., LGBTQ+) and environmental sustainability, are the wrong battles.
