Il fatto che gli europei siano stati gli invasori-distruttori nel confronto con i nativi americani è ormai assodato ed accettato quasi da tutti. Sotto questo punto di vista, il libro aggiunge la precisione del racconto ed il dettaglio su personaggi e nazioni specifiche, che può interessare un appassionato come me, ma probabilmente non il lettore medio. Il vero grande valore aggiunto è nella caratterizzazione della disperazione delle popolazioni native, abituate a vivere e a prosperare in armonia con la natura, e che chiedevano solo di mantere una parte dei propri territori originali ed i propri usi e costumi, e che invece sono stati sterminati, deportati e, per sopravvivere, costretti ad accettare un modello di vita a loro alieno. Leggetene anche solo poche pagine, l'orgoglio e la sensibilità emotiva di personaggi come Tatanka Iyotake (Toro Seduto), o Cochise vi colpirà.
European immigrants were the invaders and destroyers in the war against Native Americans: this is nowadays a widely accepted fact. From this point of view, the book adds a lot of well-documented details on single nations and their leaders, which can be of interest for someone that is fond of this history like me, but probably not for the average person. The real big value added of the book is the description of what a desperate destiny the Native Americans encountered. These people used to live in harmony with nature and only asked for the entitlement of a part of their homeland where they could continue living their traditions. Instead they were exterminated, deported and, in order to survive, forced to accept a lifestyle that was not in their chords. I encourage you to read even just some pages of this book, pride and sensibility of great personalities like Tatanka Iyotake (Sitting Bull) and Cochise will strike you.
