Una saga familiare intricata e a volte un po' frammentaria, ma sullo sfondo di una rivoluzione francese realisticamente cruda. Sicuramente un'opera immortale per l'investigazione intimistica della tragedia degli anni del terrore giacobino, ma che mi ha anche fatto ricordare che il periodo letterario ottocentesco, fra il romanticismo e il realismo non fu certo uno dei miei preferiti, con enfatiche e strazianti descrizioni di situazioni e ambienti drammatici.
An intricate family saga, sometimes a little fragmented and hard to follow, but with a cruelly realistic French revolution in the background. Undoubtedly a masterpiece, for the ability to investigate the intimate details of the Jacobin terror years, but also a book that reminded me that the nineteen century, between romanticism and realism, was definitely not one of my favorite literary eras; too much emphasis on heartbreaking descriptions of dramatic situations and contexts.
