In questo breve pamphlet, il giornalista canadese John Lorinc articola le sfide future di questo cambiamento epocale; dalla sostenibilità ambientale, a quella economica, a quella sociale. Lettura semplice e veloce, ma manca di approfondimenti su scenari futuri che intreccino la vita nelle città con possibili mutamenti più ampi in termini di tele-lavoro e tele-studio, scambi commerciali sempre più basati sul trasferimento a grandi distanze di idee, piuttosto che di beni materiali e uomini. Infine Lorinc, mentre esplora a fondo le problematiche che dovranno affrontare le grandi metropoli, non spiega come quelle sfide impatteranno aggregati urbani di media e piccola dimensione, di cui tanti paesi, soprattutto europei, sono ricchi.
In 2008, for the first time in human history, the urban population surpassed rural population worldwide. In this short essay, Canadian reporter and news editor John Lorinc analyzes the future challenges of this historical shift; from environmental sustainability, to economic and social sustainability. The book is easy to read, but the author does not explore future scenarios that correlate life in large cities with wider-reaching changes of teleworking, virtual-classrooms and trade based on ideas, rather than movement of people and goods. Eventually Lorinc, while broadly analyzing the challenges that confront large metropolis, does not explain how those will impact cities of medium to small size, which exist in so large numbers, especially in Europe.
