La propaganda e le pubbliche relazioni, molti anni prima di essere armi della pubblicità per le grandi multinazionali del largo consumo, erano strumenti di comunicazione e a volte di manipolazione dell'opinione pubblica da parte dei governanti. Chomsky analizza in uno dei suoi tipici brevi e pungenti pamphlet come questi strumenti si siano affinati e continuino ad oggi a guidare le nostre opinioni. Come sempre, d'accordo o meno, Chomsky pone dubbi a chiunque: ad esempio data la definizione di terrorismo, secondo lo US legal code e l'army manual, è: "the calculated use of violence or the threat of violence to attain goals that are political, religious or ideological in nature...through indtimidation, coercion or instilling fear" perché chiamiamo terroristi quelli che hanno distrutto il World Trade Center e non i politici e militari statunitensi che hanno rimosso con la forza governi legalmente eletti in America Latina negli anni '80? Perché gli Stati Uniti hanno condotto una guerra contro l'Afghanistan per indurre la popolazione a consegnare i sospettati, mentre nello stesso periodo (autunno 2001) Haiti ha semplicemente e civilmente chiesto l'estradizione dagli Stati Uniti stessi di Emmanuel Constant, già riconosciuto colpevole dello sterminio di oltre 4,000 haitiani?

Propaganda and public relations, a long time before being part of large multinationals' marketing arsenals, were instruments of communication and sometimes of manipulation of the public opinion used by governments. Chomsky analyzes, in one of its typical short and spark pamphlet, as these instruments have been honed in the last 100 years and continue forging our opinions today. As always, even if you do not agree with him, Chomsky's thoughts raise questions. Why the United States have lead a war against Afghanistan in order to force the population to deliver suspects of 9/11, while in the same period (autumn 2001) Haiti simply asked the US for the extradition of Emmanuel Constant, already recognized guilty of the extermination of more than 4,000 Haitians?
