Era nello scaffale da tre anni. Alcuni l'avevano tacciato di superficialità. Altri l'avevano santificato. Né l'uno né l'altro. Federico Rampini è un giornalista capace. E come tale scrive con maestria. Ci sono due pecche. Come altri giornalisti, Rampini tende ad enunciare una tesi all'inizio di un capitolo e poi portare una serie di fatti di cronaca a riprova della propria tesi e non invece ad sviscerare gli aspetti più analitici come farebbe un economista, ma d'altra parte è un libro divulgativo... L'altra pecca, secondo me più grave, è il bilanciamento dei contenuti. Il titolo farebbe pensare ad un'analisi che fonda Cina e India. Ma su oltre trecento pagine di narrazione, escluse conclusioni ed introduzione, solo ottanta sono riferite, in modo inevitabilmente superficiale, all'India, mentre il resto è un'accurata analisi del fenomeno Cina.
It had been sitting on a shelf for three years. Someone had told me it was superficial. Someone else had called it a masterpiece. Neither. Federico Rampini is a talented journalist. And as such he writes skillfully. There are two pitfalls though. As other journalists, Rampini tends to describe his thesis at the beginning of a chapter and then to corroborate it with a long series of facts, rather than to analyze theoretically every possible angle, as an economist would do, but, then, the purpose of the book is to communicate to the layman, not to scholars... The other, and I believe more serious, pitfall consist of bad balance of content. Seeing the title, the reader would expect an analysis that mixes China and India. Instead, of the over three-hundred pages, excluding conclusions and introduction, only eighty are dedicated to India, while the rest is an accurate analysis of China; the result is a rather superficial analysis of India.
