State of Fear - Michael Crichton

I primi capitoli, quando Crichton sviluppa la storia e tiene nascosti alcuni particolari, sono molto intriganti.
Dopo l'incidente di George Morton, diventa tutto molto ovvio e sembra di assistere ad un filmone d'azione tipicamente hollywoodiano; mentre leggevo continuavo ad avere flash di Schwarzy, Stallone, Bruce Willis e Vin Diesel a formare un super cast per un film di serie B. Non esattamente quello che mi aspetterei da un libro; comunque il film lo andrei a vedere per le attrici che andrebbero ad interpretare le bellissime Sarah e Jennifer...
Se dovessi confrontarlo con un altro libro in cui si intreccia il romanzo con argomenti di scienza / storia / leggende popolari, tipo il Codice Da Vinci, direi che il libro di Dan Brown merita un voto alto per come il romanzo è costruito, ma basso per il mero riciccio della storia di Maria Maddalena, già raccontata da molti altri. Questo libro di Crichton è l'esatto contrario, le argomentazioni scientifiche aprono interessanti discussioni (seppur non le condivida a priori), mentre il romanzo è scadente ... non una buona notizia per Crichton visto che questo è il suo lavoro.
Infine, non sono d'accordo con la teoria dello Stato di Paura introdotta da Crichton, secondo cui i timori per i disastri ambientali ci sono stati instillati dall'establishment politico negli ultimi 20 anni come scusa per mantenere i cittadini sotto pressione, mentre i veri pericoli sarebbero altri, tipo il terrorismo. In realtà penso che sia esattamente l'opposto. Basta guardare i dati sulle cause di mortalità confrontando coloro che muoiono per tumori, disastri naturali, malattie da malnutrizione ed inquinamento delle falde acquifere, con coloro che muoiono per attacchi terroristici.
Leggetelo in ogni caso, tanto per concedervi un paio di giorni di svago.


The first few chapters, when Crichton develops the plot, are very intriguing.
After George Morton accident, it all becomes fairly obvious and centered on Hollywood style action movies and I kept having flashes of Schwarzy, Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Vin Diesel making up the cast of a b-movie (read BAD-movie or BORING-movie as you wish); not exactly what I like to get from a book; I would see the movie anyway just to enjoy the view of any actress that would play Sarah and Jennifer.
If I had to compare this with another book that puts together fiction with science / history / mythology, like the Da Vinci Code, I would give Dan Brown 2 stars for the background story (Mary Magdalene) and 4 stars for the fiction, while I would give 5 stars to Crichton for the accurate work on global warming (I'm not saying I agree, just say it opens up interesting questions) and 1 star to the fiction... not good for him, since this is his job.
Finally I do not buy into the "State of Fear" idea that terrorism is much more a relevant fear than environmental threats, but our politicians have convinced us that the environment is the real danger. I do think that it's actually the other way around. Just work out the stats of people that die every year because of cancer, natural disasters, malaria etc. etc vis-à-vis those that die because of terrorists attacks.
