The World Without Us - Alan Weisman

Giornalista scientifico per Harper's, New York Time Magazine e varie altre testate, Alan Weisman compie un interessantissimo esperimento teorico in questo saggio: immagina cosa succederebbe al mondo se la specie Homo Sapiens si estinguesse da un giorno all'altro. Il libro spiega brevemente l'ipotesi e poi, non senza ironia, scandaglia i vari ambienti in cui l'uomo vive: città, mare, zone equatoriali ed immagina come la flora e la fauna potrebbero riappropriarsi di ecosistemi modificati progressivamente dall'uomo dalla sua apparizione in Africa 130,000 anni fa. Weisman intervista scienziati esperti in vari campi per concludere che questa conversione sarebbe per lo più molto nell'ordine di qualche centinaio di anni, ma non mancherebbero strascichi poco simpatici e a lunghissimo termine del nostro passaggio. Il fatto di avere letto questo saggio a qualche mese di distanza dall'Origine delle Specie di Darwin e da Gaia di Lovelock non fa che corroborare la mia idea che la nostra sparizione sarebbe perfettamente in armonia con la storia infinita dell'evoluzione del pianeta terra!

Scientific journalist for Harper's, New York Time Magazine and other magazines, Alan Weisman carries out a very interesting theoretical experiment in this essay: he imagines what would happen to planet earth if Homo Sapiens vanished... tomorrow. The book briefly describes the hypothesis, then, often with a healthy dose of irony, scans all parts of the earth where we live in: cities, seas, equatorial lands and imagines how flora and fauna would take back ownerships of all ecosystems progressively modified by men since we appeared in Africa 130,000 years ago. Weisman interviews scientists with experience in a variety of fields and concludes that soon after we are gone, often in a matter of tens or hundreds of years, the face of earth would change profoundly; nevertheless he stresses that some nasty impacts of our passage would last much longer. As I read this essay a few months after reading Darwin's The Origin of Species and Lovelock's Gaia, I'm even more convinced that mankind extinction (sudden or slow) is in perfect harmony with the infinite evolution of planet earth!
