I testi scolastici mi hanno sempre lasciato la voglia di approfondire argomenti che erano riassunti ed estratti da studi ben più approfonditi di grandi scrittori e scienziati. L'opera omnia di Darwin era sicuramente uno di questi argomenti. Pubblicata nel 1859, questa ricerca sull'origine degli esseri viventi di qualsiasi classe, genere, specie è da considerare al pari degli studi di Galileo, Keplero, Newton per come hanno mutato profondamente non solo una specifica scienza, ma l'intero modo di pensare dell'umanità. La lettura è facile, ma piuttosto tediosa, lungo le quasi 700 pagine (nell'edizione che io avevo a disposizione); infatti, Darwin fonda la sua teoria su prove dettagliatissime, ma ciò richiede descrizioni minuziose di organi e organismi di ogni tipo. Dovrebbe essere una lettura obbligatoria nelle scuole di tutto il mondo, contro l'oscurantismo religioso che abbaglia ancora tanti paesi... anche nei cosiddetti paesi sviluppati!
School textbooks always left me with the desire to go well beyond the summary and extracts of world-renowned authors and scientists. Darwin masterpiece was one of the topics that I wanted to explore more in depth. Published in 1859, this research on the origin of animals and plants of any genera and species is to be considered at par with studies done by Galileo, Kepler and Newton, because it not only changed how we look at a specific science, but profoundly shifted how humanity thinks of itself and its history. Darwin's writing is very easy and well organized, but some paragraphs are really boring, along the 700 pages (at least that was the number in the edition I had); in fact, Darwin bases his theory on very detailed evidence, but to do so he has to describe organs and organisms so specifically that I had to re-read some sentences three or four times. Regardless, this ought to be a mandatory reading for school pupils around the world, against the religious obscurantism that dominates many countries... even those we categorize as developed!
