The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order - Samuel P. Huntington

Non sono un esperto di affari internazionali, per cui non sono in grado di dire se le teorie di Huntington siano adeguate a descrivere le complesse dinamiche politiche e sociali nel mondo attuale; tuttavia ho trovato il libro di una chiarezza assoluta (anche appunto per un non esperto) e ricco di descrizioni precise di eventi attuali a supporto delle teorie proposte. Ho avuto la sensazione che ci fosse qualche contraddizione fra la teoria generale per cui i conflitti del mondo contemporaneo sono generati da differenze fondamentali fra civilizzazioni ed invece alcune pagine in cui lo stesso Huntington indica anche motivazioni di puro predominio economico fra i driver delle guerre. Ma la differenza io penso stia in quel "anche", lo scontro di civiltà non è l'unico driver dei conflitti fra nazioni, ma è un elemento importante. Ed ho adorato il messaggio finale: "è pericolosi e non è moralmente giusto voler imporre la civilizzazione occidentale come universale", sicuramente non è giusto usarla come pretesto per scatenare guerre, "piuttosto bisogna favorire l'incontro fra culture e cercare un terreno comune fra quel sottile sottostrato di valori che accomunano l'umanità in quanto tale" e che non hanno nulla a che fare con lo spiccato individualismo, il liberismo economico, la tradizione cristiana, etc. etc. della civiltà occidentale.


I am not an expert of foreign affairs, thus I am not qualified to judge if professor Huntington theories are adequate to describe the complex political and social dynamics of current world affairs; nevertheless, I found the book extremely well written and clear (even for a non-expert) and rich with descriptions of current events that we all hear about, to support the theory. I had the feeling that prof. Huntington contradicts himself when he describes the drivers of wars and conflicts that arose in the last 20 years, because he often includes pure economic hegemony as a factor and not just the clash of civilization. But I believe the key difference is in that "not just, ... but also": i.e. the clash of civilization is not the only driver of clash, but an important one. Most of all I loved one of the conclusions, when the author says: "it is dangerous and morally wrong to try to impose Western civilization as universal civilization", for sure it is not right to apply this idea to go to war, "rather we need to favor dialogue among multiple cultures and try to find commonalities within that thin layer of values that are share because we are all humans", values that have nothing to do with individualism, liberalism, Christianity, etc. etc., which characterize us as Westerners.
